The Fisheries

The Fisheries

There are dozens of fisheries in Oregon, Washington and California. The definition of a fishery is as diverse as the population of fish in the Pacific Ocean. It can be defined in terms of the people involved, species of fish, area of water, region, method of fishing, class of boats and purpose of the activities. Whew! Fisheries are also divided between commercial and recreational.

Everyone has the opportunity to participate in a fishery. Since the early 1800’s, commercial fisheries have existed off the coast of Oregon, Washington and California. Over that time period a number of fisheries-related stakeholders have emerged. Some of which are fishermen, seafood processors, fisheries managers, marine researchers, conservation organizations and seafood consumers.

Pacific Fish Trax and its projects encourage diverse stakeholders to join together and share innovations and information for the good of our one common interest: sustainable fisheries.

Pacific Fish Trax has two projects working in two Oregon fisheries: salmon and albacore. As our reach and successes grow, so will the number of fisheries Pacific Fish Trax supports.
